An old barn that has been restored and transformed into a showcase for the Royal Automobile Club’s collection of vintage vehicles has been named Surrey’s best heritage conservation project. The Old Barn Motor House, Woodcote Park, Epsom scooped the top prize in the Surrey Heritage Awards 2017, organised by Surrey Historic Buildings Trust and supported by Surrey Life Magazine. The architect and design team behind the conversion of the barn received their trophy and certificate from SHBT’s Patron, Mr Michael More-Molyneux, Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, in a ceremony at Loseley Park. Surrey Historic Buildings Trust had made two grants towards repairs to a medieval building, Old Well Cottage, in Peaslake. This is a Grade II Listed open hall house dating from c.1400. The Trust has made a grant of £1,400 for re-rendering the whole of the front wall in three-coat lime, and a further £2,000 to fund repairs to the boundary wall at the same property. The wall is important because it has a high public profile in a rural location and contributes considerably to the setting of the listed house.

Surrey Historic Buildings Trust (SHBT) has announced the shortlist for the Surrey Heritage Awards 2017. The Chairman and Trustees of Surrey Historic Buildings Trust are delighted to announce the launch of our new annual Surrey Heritage Awards. The aim of the award scheme is to highlight best practice in conservation, preservation, care, repair and enhancement of Surrey’s historic buildings. The new Heritage Awards scheme is being publicised to all eleven of Surrey’s district and borough councils, and we are encouraging local authorities to seek nominations from within their district in addition to making their own nominations. We are delighted to report that Mr Michael More-Molyneux, who recently succeeded Dame Sarah Goad as Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for the County of Surrey, has accepted the invitation from Surrey Historic Buildings Trust to become our Patron. Mr More-Molyneux is the first Patron in the history of the Trust. He is, of course, not only the owner of one of Surrey’s finest historic houses, namely Loseley Park, but is a longstanding and active supporter of the cause of heritage conservation in Surrey, and as such is ideally qualified to be our first-ever Patron.
